Women's Soccer Headlines Memorable Autumn With Fourth Consecutive GNAC Championship

IT’S BEEN AN AUTUMN TO REMEMBER as four °µÍøTV teams were nationally ranked since September.

For the second year in a row, the women’s soccer team finished the regular season unbeaten and ranked No. 2 in the nation. Winning their fourth consecutive GNAC championship and their first regional title, the Falcons advanced to the Final Four, December 1 and 3 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Meanwhile, men’s soccer (15-3-3) returned to the playoffs for a Division II record 29th time and was ranked as high as No. 3 nationally. They advanced to the Far West Regional championship game before being eliminated in overtime, 2–1, by Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Chris Johnson led 16th-ranked women’s volleyball (22-6) to a postseason berth and the GNAC title in his first year as coach. Women’s cross country, ranked No. 13 in the nation, won the conference, and Meredith Crane earned a trip to the NCAA Championships.

Early indications are that the basketball season could again extend well into March. °µÍøTV was installed as the GNAC women’s favorite. New coach Julie van Beek has four starters back from the team that was national runner-up last year. The men look strong following a 20-win season and NCAA tournament berth.

Both basketball teams were in action December 3 for the Oak Harbor Freight Lines Challenge in Brougham Pavilion. Gymnastics begins its season January 20 with three All-Americans in the lineup, including three-time national champion Debra Huss.
